Practices for an Evolving Life

They Don't Tell You How

“You need to love yourself more.” “You shouldn’t feel that way.” “Always put other people first. Don’t be selfish.” The one thing that is missing from all this good advice is telling you HOW to do it. We introduce you to practical tools using your own character traits to support you in creating practical answers to those questions. Read more here.

Two memoirs tell about times of extreme personal growth in the author’s life. Sunny Side Up is a window into the early 70s when certain young adults were searching for a way to head off society’s path bent on materialism. The Transparent Feather tells of a dying author passing the torch of writing to her new friend cum student.

About BJ Appelgren

BJ AppelgrenI have been a student and teacher of personal change all of my adult life beginning as an artist educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After years as a graphic designer and art teacher, I developed a class called Perceptions that used the art experience as a venue for students to examine their attitudes and beliefs about themselves and others.

During my life I have practiced as an artist, art teacher, potter, eight years as executive director of a non-profit advocacy agency for people with handicapping conditions, author of Healing Arts Report, a newsletter about the new life paradigm including information about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and as a licensed counselor.

I see life as a continuing process of directing attention and learning in order to maintain inner balance. Emotions, physical well-being, life style, the surrounding culture, physical environment, and relationships are all aspects of wholesome living.

I also bring this point of view into my writing. In recent years I have published two memoirs. Sunny Side Up is about an English experimental school for adults created by philosopher, JG Bennett, in the early 1970s when thousands of young adults were searching for spiritual truth and sustainable alternatives to a culture of growing materialism.

The Transparent Feather, an earlier memoir, documents my relationship with the well-known Southern writer, Berry Morgan, whose stories were published regularly in The New Yorker from 1966 to 1988. When I revealed to Berry how my stories became worse each time I tried to improve them, Berry constructed an effective method for teaching me some principles of narrative.

My continuous education includes studies with gifted mentors in Gestalt and Jungian psychology, Emotional Freedom Techniques, meditation, visualization, shamanic principles, subtle energy, and related topics of personal growth. See services offered here.

About This Website

OUR PERSONAL ROLE. While Healing Arts Report’s mission is to support the development of a healthier society, the subhead “Practices For An Evolving Life” refers to our unique individual role in making that happen. Although we have ideals, there is much that gets in the way of practicing them. The times, however, are ripe for us to learn better ways to practice them.

We don’t need lectures, workshops, books, fixing, or punishing. We need to value practices that make our lives and the lives of those around us happier and more fulfilling. Practices that create results give us confidence and experience.

COOPERATING WITH NATURE. We come to understand our natural capacity for growth and change. While learning more about the dynamics operating in the universe, we learn to co-operate with those forces and express more of who we know ourselves to be. Click on words that interest you in the tag cloud on the right side of each page to see posts relating to that word.

SCIENCE IS SUPPORTING US. For those who fear that humanity cannot improve itself, science is supporting the reality of our ability to change in essential ways. Epigenetics demonstrates how modification of behavior and environment can turn genes “on” or “off.” We no longer see genetics as determining our limitations.

Understanding the natural plasticity of the brain and new instruments that indicate brain activity support the reality of changing the structure of the brain through practice. Discoveries about subtle energy substantiated by ever-more sensitive instruments are also opening new possibilities for healing and growth every day.

We have a role to play in our own evolution.
